Suspect held without bail

Sheriff's deputies found Igor V. Samolyuk sitting next to his wife's body in a 1997 Honda Civic parked at the end of Ayers Road in Finley on Sunday morning.
The 19-year-old slaying suspect's two brothers and father stood nearby. Officers said the suspect had called his relatives to come out to the remote site, and they had called police.
Detective Doug Stanley of the Benton County Sheriff's Office told Superior Court Judge Carrie Runge on Monday that Samolyuk of Kennewick had told his relatives, "You're not going to believe what I've done. I killed my wife and cut my wrists."
His wife, Yana V. Samolyuk, 18, of Pasco, had been stabbed to death. The death apparently capped a stormy relationship that had been marked by the recent birth of a child.
After hearing the detective, Runge ordered the Ukrainian native, who had bandages on both wrists, to be held without bail. He has yet to be formally charged, but is the only suspect in the slaying.
On Monday, family members remembered a talented student and dedicated mother. They said the couple had been married for a year, having met while attending the Church of Salvation ARC in Kennewick.
Sheriff Larry Taylor said the couple were separated, and she was living with her family in Pasco and he was living with his father in Kennewick.
There never was a protection order filed between the two, but Igor Samolyuk was sentenced after a domestic violence arrest in October 2005 to a jail sentence and to take anger management classes. Samolyuk's criminal history also includes two DUI arrests since May 2004.
Yana Samolyuk gave birth to a baby girl, Karina, 2 1/2 weeks ago.
The baby was not with her mother when she was killed, and has since been staying with the woman's mother, Vera Kokadeyeva.
Her mother said Monday that everything Yana Samolyuk did was for her baby.
"She loved her family," Kokadeyeva said, as her 13-year-old daughter interpreted for her.
The young mother recently graduated from Pasco High, where she was an honor student, and the Tri-Tech Skills Center, where she was studying nursing.
"She just wanted to live happy," Kokadeyeva said. "We'll never forget her."
Kokadeyeva and her husband, Viktor, brought their family to the United States from Russia in 2002, coming to be closer to family members who already lived in Pasco.
The family's apartment was filled Monday afternoon with friends and relatives, who came to offer their condolences to the couple and Yana Samolyuk's two siblings.
"It's hard to bury your own kids," Kokadeyeva said.
Monday afternoon, Benton County sheriff's officials detailed what happened the morning Yana Samolyuk was killed.
Taylor said the dispatch center received a 911 call from one of Igor Samolyuk's relatives at 8:33 a.m. reporting the incident.
Hours earlier, Kennewick police had responded to a call that the couple were arguing in the parking lot of the Starbucks at Highway 395 and Clearwater Avenue.
Sgt. Ken Lattin of the Kennewick Police Department said officers were dispatched at 4:15 a.m., and when they arrived they found the couple sitting together talking.
"She said she was OK," Lattin said.
He said officers offered to find her a ride home, but she declined. He said officers stayed for a few minutes and watched the couple to make sure everything was all right before they left.
Sheriff Taylor said officers suspect that from Starbucks the couple drove to Ayers Road in Finley. By 7:30 a.m., she was dead.
Coroner Floyd Johnson said she bled to death after she was stabbed seven times with a knife, including once to the left side of her neck.
